The in the second is the chain rule being undone. Forgetting it is the most frequent error in the whole chapter.

The minus sign on the first is the one that goes missing. Differentiating your answer takes five seconds and catches it.

The is not decoration. In a question that gives you a point on the curve, is the only thing that distinguishes the curve you want from every parallel curve above and below it — and finding it is usually the second half of the marks.
