Ten-frame worksheets: what they are and how to use them in Grade 1–2

A ten-frame is a simple two-row grid with five cells in each row — ten cells in total. Students place counters in the frame to represent numbers, making it immediately visible how far a number is from five, from ten, and from each other. It sounds almost too simple. But number-sense research consistently shows it is one of the most effective manipulatives for building fluency in the early years.

Why ten-frames work

Young learners struggle to 'see' numbers larger than about four at a glance — a skill called subitizing. Ten-frames break numbers into visible groups that anchor to five and ten, the two friendliest landmarks in the base-10 system. A child who can look at a ten-frame showing 7 and immediately think '5 and 2 more' is well on the way to mental arithmetic.

• Anchoring to 5 — filling the top row first makes 5 automatic.
• Anchoring to 10 — a full frame is instantly recognisable as 10.
• Complements — an empty cell in a full frame shows what is needed to make 10.
• Comparison — two frames side by side make 'which is more?' visual, not abstract.

How to use ten-frame worksheets in class

Ten-frame worksheets give each student a paper version of the manipulative to work with independently. A typical sequence moves from concrete (counters on a physical frame) to representational (drawing counters on a printed frame) to abstract (writing the number). This 'CPA' progression is backed by decades of research and is the foundation of Singapore Math.

• Read the frame: show a completed frame, students write the number they see.
• Fill the frame: give a number, students shade the correct cells.
• Find the missing number: frame shows 7 — how many more to make 10?
